US Secret Service & Presidential Limousines |
The US Secret Service operates and maintains the presidential limos and back-up limos. They also do the same for the fleet of limousines used for the President's family, the Vice President, former presidents, visiting foreign heads of state, and other protected persons. Much of the details about the Secret Service Limos is classified information. Each limo was custom built for the Secret Service to their exacting specifications, and they order more than one of the same type of limo at a time. Older limos are kept and used multiple purposes. The limos used by the President and the Vice President will carry the seal of each office on the side of the limo. Limos used by other protected persons will not have a seal on the side of the car. The latest limousine used by the Secret Service for the President is a 2009 Cadillac. | ||

The 2009 Cadillac Limousine was first put into official service on Jan 20, 2009 for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The limo was custom built by General Motors using a General Motors truck platform and truck engine, just like several other previous presidential limos had been. The vehicle needed to be built on a truck platform due to the great amount of weight of the vehicle with all of its armor and special security equipment. The body of the new limo is not based on any particular Cadillac model like previous limos had been. Instead, this new limo has a custom body that borrows styling cues and features from several Cadillac model, including the DTS, STS, CTS, and Escalade. Its official name is the 2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine, however many, including some in the Secret Service, refer to it as "The Beast", due to its immense size and weight. |

Lincoln
K-Series
Convertible
"Sunshine
Special" The Sunshine Special was originally a Lincoln K-series built by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company, and modified by Brunn & Company to U.S. Government specifications. The limousine was originally equipped with a siren, running lights, and a 2-way radio, as well as extra-wide running boards and grab handles for Secret Service agents. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Secret Service began to express concern in relation to potential assassination attempts against the president, as his limousine at that time was not armoured and had no protective features. The vehicle was then modified with armor plating for the doors, bullet-proof tires, inch-thick windows and storage compartments for pistols and sub-machine guns. After President Roosevelt’s death in 1945, the Sunshine Special remained in the White House fleet and was used by President Truman until a new fleet of Lincoln limousines was acquired after the 1948 election. The limousine is now on permanent display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. |
