When Napoleon's forces went home in 1814, the king of Piedmont imitated the
departing French Gendarmerie Nationale by creating a Corps of Carabinieri,
recruiting many of his officers from the ranks of the aristocracy, and deriving the
name from the short, light carbine rifles carried by cavalry soldiers. This new law
enforcement unit was composed of professional troops who were given authority
over both the armed forces and the civilian population. In the years that followed,
these developed an esprit de corps and group cohesion which lingers today.
