Dodge offered it's first Police Package on the 1956 Dodge Coronet. Plymouth, who had a history of making fleet cars for taxi use, entered into the Police Package market in 1957. Dodge and Plymouth would come to dominate the police car market in the 1960's to the 1970's. Dodge would be the primary car choice for the California Highway Patrol from the late 1950s to the late 1980s, with only a few years with other makes chosen. While Dodge and Plymouth would be the mainstays of Chrysler's fleet offerings, in many years Chrysler branded police vehicles were offered, having best sales in years when a comparable Plymouth was not available, such as the 1979 Chrysler Newport or the 1981 Chrysler Lebaron police package vehicles.
