1950-1970's Chevrolet Police Vehicles
Chevrolet police package vehicles from the past. Chevrolet was one of the 3 car makes to be part of the low price 3 since the 1930's. It was Ford, Chevrolet  and Plymouth that were the top choices for police departments even before official police packages were available. In 1955 Chevrolet introduced it's first police package on it's all new 1955 Chevrolet One Fifty. It was powered by a 265 cid small block V-8. The police package was initially available for 1955 with a long lead time, it was much more readily available the next model year 1956. The full sized Chevrolet B-Body was introduced in year 1959, and continued to be updated for decades, ending with the final B-Body Chevrolet, the 1996 Chevrolet Caprice. The B-Body was the main police vehicle for Chevrolet from 1959 to the late 1970's. The police package was generally available on the lowest priced model of the full sized Chevrolet  each year. For 1958, this was the Chevrolet Delray. Starting in 1959 it was the Chevrolet Biscayne as the large low price car from Chevrolet. While the police package was also available on the higher priced Bel Air, most departments who used Chevrolets choose the Biscayne from 1959 until the early 1970's.   It was in 1973 that the Biscayne name would no longer be available, and the formerly mid priced Bel Air became the low priced full sized model. For 1973 the police package could be had on the Bel AIr or the Impala. Again it was the lower priced model, the Bel Air, that was used more than the Impala for police service from 1973 to 1975. For 1976, the Bel Air name was no more, and the 1976 Impala was now the low price full sized sedan, and now the only full sized police Chevrolet. The full sized B-Body was not the only car available with a police package from Chevrolet in the 1960s and 1970s. For years 1961 and 1962 Chevrolet offered a police package on the rear air-cooled engined, compact Chevrolet Corvair. For 1962 Chevrolet offered a police package on it's new Chevy II. The 1962 Police Package Chevy II had a standard engine of 153 cid four cyl with 90 hp, or optional 194 cid 6 cyl with 120 hp. For 1963 the Chevrolet II would continue with a police package. For 1964, the new mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle was available with a police package. For 1965, the Chevy II was no longer available with a police package, but he Chevelle police package continued, however only with a 194 cid 6 cyl engine with 120 hp, it's last year for a while as a police car. The police package would return to the Chevelle in 1969, now with an available V-8 The Chevelle would again be unavailable for years 1970 and 1971 as a police package, returning in 1972, with the Chevelle 9C1 Police Package, the first use of the Central Purchase Order code "9C1" that would later become the standard code for full police package Chevrolets for years to come. The Chevelle police package would continue until it's final production year 1977.
