Nova 9C1 The compact Chevrolet Nova was restyled with a new body in 1975, and for the first time was offered with a police package. It was equipted with a 5.7 liter 350 cid 4 bbl V-8, with dual exhausts, putting out 155 hp. Delopment of the polcie Nova had started the year before with tests done on the 1974 model. The Nova borrowed it's break from the full sized Bel Air police car, and suspensipon from the Camaro. (1) When tested by the Los Angeles County CA Sheriff's Department, it outperformed the benchmark AMC Matadore that was the current choice of the sheriff's department and many other law enforcement agencies at the time. For 1975 the Sheriff's Department madeof 1/3 of it's fleet with Novas. It was available as a 4 door sedan for 1975. For 1976 the police package also became available in the 2 door coupe version of the Nova. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department made the Nova it's exclusive patrol vehicle for years 1976, 1977 and 1978. No major changes to the 1976 Nova, except hp was now rated at 165 hp from the V-8 engine. For 1977 the Nova 9C1 had another rengine option added, the 5.0 305 cid 2 bbl V-8 with 145 hp. The larger 5.7 liter V-8 was also stil available for 1977. 1978 would be the last year for the police package on the Nova, as the Malibu 9C1 would take it's place for 1979 for the police car market. The retail Nova remain until 1979, being replaced by the new front drive Citation in 1980. Law enforcement agencies that used the Nova 9C1 included the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and police departments from Boston MA, St Louis MO, Madison WI, Portmand ME, Portland OR, Ft Worth TX, Jacksonvile FL, Savannah GA, and many others. |
