1997-1999 Chevrolet Tahoe PPV & SSV
Available from 1997-1999, the Police Package Chevrolet Tahoe wasa a heavily modified police truck, powered by a 255 hp, 5.7 liter Vortec V-8 matched to a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. It was an inch lower than regular Tahoes, had a unique plastic grill with single headlights, and was only available in 2 wheel drive onthe 4 door model. In testing the Police Package Tahoe reached a top speed of 123 MPH, and had 0-60 times of 9.4 seconds. In 1999 Chevrolet offered a 4 wheel drive police special service package Tahoe. This Tahoe looked just like a retail Tahoe, and was slower than the 2 wheel drive version. It was meant for light duty police work, not the heavy duty police work of the 2 wheel drive, full Police Package Tahoe. The Chevy Tahoe saw many used in police departments. Many used them for K-9 units, supervisors units, traffic units, and other specialized applications. The New York State Police and Michigan State Police were two departments that used quite a few Tahoes along side their Ford Crown Victorias. Not every Chevy Tahoe used by police departments was a police package. Many departments started using Tahoes for police work long before the police package became available And since the Police Package was only available as a 2 wheel drive model, many departments were buying the 4 wheel drive retail model for off road and bad weather use. The retail Chevy Tahoe was also available as a 2 door model. The Chevrolet Tahoe was the last of the 2 door, full sized sport utilities. These 2 door sport utes have always been popular with police departments. The Dodge RamCharger went away in the eary 1990's, and the Ford Bronco's last year was 1996. The 2 door Tahoe was the last to go away in 1999. An all new Chevrolet Tahoe was released in 2000, available only as a 4 door model and no Police Package available until 2005 for the new mode.
