Austria Federal Police - Bundespolizei The Bundespolizei is the national police force for the country of Austria, and is normally referred to as the Federal Police. This agency is responsible for law enforcement in both cities and the rural areas. Before 2005, a separate law enforcement agency, the Federal Gendarmerie, has been responsible for law enforcement in the rural areas. The Federal Gendarmerie was merged in to the Federal Police on July 1, 2005, to form a single, national police force.
