1995-2001 Ford Explorer Special Service Package New styling for the Explorer in 1995 gave it a sliightly less of a boxy look. It also got a brand new suspension. For 1995 and 1996 the Special Sevice Package was only available in 4x4 trim, and continued to use the 4.0 V6 from the prior model. (1) (2) Two brand new engines were introduced for the Explorer for the 1997 model year. The first engine was a new 4.0 litre SOHC V-6, with 205 hp. The second engine was the old 5.0 litre V-8, with 210 hp,  than had been used in the old Ford Mustang. (2) The Explorer carried on pretty much unchanged until the 2001 model year. For 2001, the Special Service Package was also made available on the Explorer Sport Track. For 2002 a completely new Explorer was introduced. It also was made available with a Special Service Package
